I do hope the studio stuff will be sorted and takes the pressure of. Thanks to Kitty's persistence you did a lot more than you thought. So Kitty is a great addition to your workflow. There' sone thing that comes to mind, you plan things and do you leave gaps where you can do nothing or anything you want. It stimulates creativity having blocks of time with no obligations. The jury duty messed up your planning and scheme, luckily that done now I presume.
Well that book goes onto the xmas Wishlist.
Awh I feel very honoured - spotted a few of my little bits and bobs in your gallery! I enjoyed Weeknots - have a fab weekend :)
I now realise this was last week, so have a great weekend in the past!
Hey Dan, appreciate your videos. Did you ever make the video you mentioned at the end of this video?
Not yet. However I’ve just finished wrapping up my handwriting code so I can get on with that now. So soon™️
AUDIO VERSION 😁 This is supposed to be an audio version of my newsletter. But recording a video was the easiest way for me to edit it, so I figured I'd upload the video too, but it's not really supposed to be a video!
love this review dan!
Thanks, it's fun making these.
Hi, I really like the pen plotting patterns you’ve created. You mentioned that these patterns are outputs of "preseed." Could you please elaborate on what you mean by that? I’m not familiar with the term and couldn’t find a satisfactory explanation online. Is it some sort of code or program? I would appreciate any help you can provide. I’m new to these concepts and trying to piece together information from various sources to get a complete picture. Thank you!
It's from an earlier project I did called "YYYSeed" (for various dull reasons), more here: www.fxhash.xyz/generative/26057 While I was working on that project I liked some of the very early results, before I went to add in everything else. So I took a snapshot of the code at that point, and I'm revisiting it now. It's called "Preseed" because it comes before "YYYSeed" and there's a second project called "Postseed", which is an extension. Probably doesn't help you that much, but that's what the name means.
@@revdancatt Thanks for your reply. Each new piece of information is adding to my understanding in this field. These insights are like building blocks that I hope will greatly benefit me in the future. For example, your mention of the fxhash platform was new to me and very enlightening. Thank you again for your help!
Loved to see the postcard from Groningen
One of my favourites!
I'm glad to have a WeekNots even when a WeekNotes doesn't work out. I'm surprised you're rolling to quarternotes instead of saying "jury duty weeks don't count; this is not actually week x; it's not a week at all".
I know what you mean, but also that'd throw all my arbitrary timing out! 😁
I really love the variety that comes from such simple elements arranged randomly. Cool designs.
I know "tool changes" are a pain but an accent color for the Pop segments (the lines) could look really nice.
Oh, that's a fun idea. I'll export the lines and the shapes separately and see how that goes.
Normal service, whatever that is, shall resume next week! Probably.
It's been fun following your handwriting journey with Kitty. Any plans to share the code for randomizing the letters?
Yes and no 😁 Ultimately yes, but I need to do some write-ups of it first, and then clean it up to change is from a "Works for me" to a "can work for anyone" state.
Hi, great video. Do you think it it possible to use it with a calligraphy pencil as well? And do you think it would be wise to use a font that is calligraphy then? Thanks
Using a calligraphy pen is tricky as controlling downward pressure is pretty hard, and you'd also have to control the direction of the strokes (which is less hard). And pencils don't work that well in the plotter. A calligraphy font would be fine though, the the writing implement would be tricky.
I don't know you but I've seen so many of your videos. The change in mood from 0:15 to 1:30 about jury duty is clear. The intro to the newsletter isn't great either. Just hoping physically/mentally you're doing OK. Sending my best wishes.
Thank you, and yeah, I'm doing... okay, lol. Last week this week and I'm so looking forwards to getting back to creating.
Short but sharp
Thank you, sometimes we need to adapt to the situation.
You know I love what you do and how you do it, but can I just say how impressed I am at the very lovely clear desk you have for planning on?! DREAMS CAN COME TRUE
PS I thought you'd invented Week Notes!
I make sure in the last half hour of the day to clear the desk, so it's ready again for more planning tomorrow, it's a luxury item for sure. I wish I had, but they're a combination of weeknotes, 12-week year and journaling. These from DW are beautiful though: walknotes.com/ - and I wish* I could write like she does. *But clearly not enough to actually put the work in.
Great set of videos, Dan. I'm really new to fxhash and find it pretty daunting, but your overviews are making it seem a lot less scary! Many thanks 👍
Jury duty this week, so things are, errr, a little different.
Can you explain what database you store all your answers in? I am trying to figure out how to chat with ChatGPT but have it save all that data so it can turn it into a biography or answer questions about all the stories I tell it.
Hey two answers! All the answers get stored in a simple JSON file as plain text. Which is fine because I only ever do things like "Can you summarise the last two weeks?" and then I just send the last two weeks of answers along with the prompt. But maybe a better answer, is for _other_ things I use the pinecone vector database: pinecone.io/ - which is more complicated but that's the database I store everything else. Most of the time though if just giving it _all the text_ is easier then store everything is .txt files.
Your handwriting algorithm is so successful. My own approach was far, far simpler in comparison. I just tried to focus on all letters connecting at approximately the same angle and point. Yours looks so natural. Now, if only the plotter could vary the pen angle and pressure! (I have wondered if you could extend the Axidraw API to vary the speed mid-path). I also like how you make things so modular, where you're not making a piece of art or writing, you're making a tool to make art and writing. Again: bravo!
Thanks, this was super satisfying to do, but totally over the top!! Simpler is generally always better, lol. But yeah I do have a system now I can throw pretty much anything at and have it write for me. Hand cramp is now a thing of the past! 😁
Very nice! Did you digitalize your handwriting yourself or did you have it done somewhere?
This was all done myself, I wrote out LOTS of letter combinations on an eInk tablet, then converted that into a series of points that then get used in code to create new letters.
@@revdancatt Can you make a video on this process?
@@PatrickRF Yup, that's the plan.
A to Z joined up is impressive!
Yeah, that's a really fun one, a single line of joined up letters, was super satisfying.
Mrs is a teacher, can I get this for her 😂
@5:20 Cursive!! ........super Excellent !!
Thanks, it's getting there!
Shaky handheld cam in full effect this week, sorry. Perhaps when the studio sells I'll get a camera with stabilisation in 🫨
Hi Dan, I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my admiration for your incredible work in generative digital art and the transformation of your digital creations into physical art with a pen plotter. Your pieces are truly inspiring! I'm very interested in learning more about this art form and was hoping you could guide me in the right direction. I have a DIY pen plotter that I built, and I’d love to enhance its value by diving deeper into the generative art process. Specifically, I’m eager to learn about the software and coding techniques used in this field. Could you recommend any resources or provide some advice on where to start? Your guidance would be greatly appreciated as I look to contribute to this exciting field. Thank you so much!
Hi, sadly there's still not too much out there to get people started with the whole process. There's a couple of newsletters that are worth digging into... www.gorillasun.de/tag/newsletter/ amygoodchild.substack.com/ I'm hoping to put more info up here on the channel soon too.
@@revdancatt Thank you so much for your response and pointing me towards those newsletters. I'll definitely dig into them to get started. I'll also keep an eye on your channel for any new information you post. It's great to know that you're working on providing more resources. Your guidance is really appreciated as i embark on this journey. Thanks again!
Have you tried this with shimmer, sheen or shading inks?
Yup!! It works pretty well, but depends on the paper a lot. I tend to avoid it most of the time though as it isn't very light fast. It's something I want to explore a bit more though.
looking cool
The book on the desk sparked my interest. Looks nice the book Murdle
Nice
This week was all about handwriting progress, we're getting there, so close now!
Dan, this makes my head hurt... but my heart race 🥰
Again - I don't know exactly what this is, but I love it!
Your videos are superb, with fantastic music and editing. I am surprised it has only 7.3k subscribers. It deserves more. Greetings from Poland. I've been to Shrewsbury while I was working at Ellesmere.
Thank you, and hello Poland, hope you enjoyed your time here! And we all gotta start somewhere with those subs.
First! Have a good weekend Dan.
Yay, thank you!!
Got back onto the handwriting stuff today, and a big old bit about books.
Optimized fot what criteria?
It's optimized for shortest drawing/movement distance. The code creates the tiles from top-left corner, across one row at a time, which isn't the fastest way of drawing. Imagine you have lots of straight lines all starting on the lefts and ending on the right (as created in code). Plotted like that the machine would draw one line, lift the pen and move all the way to the start of the next one. If instead it drew them alternately from left-to-right, and then the next one back the other way, right-to-left you pretty much half the travel distance. That's what's going on here, it's working out the shortest distance from the end of one line to the next, which cause it to travel around the page rather than systematically. Hope that makes sense.
Thats siiick 😮❤
Cheers
What is this? Im not even sure what is going on, but i love it!
Hah, I feel like that sometimes!
Woahh that looks so cool!
Thank you!
Keep going man thats amazing❤
Thanks 🔥 will do!
very nice robot art you got there 👌👌👍
Thank you so much 😀
Should of done all blue I like the pattern
I'll do a few more with the all over pattern.
I like it when you use chunky pens! Very satisfying.
Yeah, for some reason the chunky pens and the cardboard go really well together.
Could you advise how to tighten the belts I keep getting drift in the x axis can't figure why
super interesting. thanks for this!
My pleasure!
Very good explanation why you do week notes and the benefits you and we as an audience have of them. Thanks. How did the exam of your son go and how's the space cadet? btw I'm looking forward to the plotter tutorials.
Hah, the exam went well, and the space cadet is doing a lot better. The tutorials still puttering along.
